Umbwe Route
The most direct and steepest route to the summit. Umbwe is for experienced trekkers seeking a challenge with solitude and wild beauty.

Overview
The Umbwe Route is the most direct and steepest path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it the most challenging of all the established routes. This route is recommended only for experienced trekkers who are confident in their fitness and ability to handle significant altitude gain over a short distance. The Umbwe Route gains altitude rapidly, ascending from the rainforest to the moorland in a single demanding day. The steep sections through the forest involve some scrambling and require good balance and stamina. What the Umbwe Route lacks in gradual acclimatization, it makes up for in solitude and raw natural beauty. You will encounter very few other climbers on this route, especially in the early days, giving you a true wilderness experience. The route joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp, after which you follow the same path through the Barranco Wall and on to the summit. We recommend the 7-day version with an extra acclimatization day to improve your summit chances.
