Rongai Route
The only route approaching from the north, Rongai offers a drier, less traveled experience with wilderness feel and wildlife viewing chances.

Overview
The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. This unique approach means the Rongai Route receives significantly less rainfall than the southern routes, resulting in drier conditions and clearer trekking. The route retains a genuine wilderness feel, especially in the early days, and passes through beautiful forest where you may spot wildlife including colobus monkeys, buffalo, and even elephant. The gradual ascent through the rainforest and moorland makes this route one of the more comfortable climbing experiences, and the drier conditions reduce the risk of gear getting soaked. The Rongai Route diverges from the Marangu Route at Kibo Hut, and the descent follows the Marangu trail, so you get to experience two different sides of the mountain. The northern approach also offers unique views of the mountain that are not visible from the southern routes. This route is an excellent choice for those who prefer a quieter, more remote experience with a good chance of wildlife encounters.
