Discover Selous Game Reserve
The Selous Game Reserve — now officially renamed Nyerere National Park in honor of Tanzania's founding father — is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, spanning over 50,000 square kilometers. This vast wilderness is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remains one of the most undisturbed ecosystems on the continent. Unlike the more famous northern parks, Selous receives a fraction of the visitors, offering a truly exclusive and remote safari experience. The reserve is defined by the mighty Rufiji River, which flows through its heart, creating a network of lakes, channels, and swamps that support enormous populations of hippo, crocodile, and birdlife. What makes Selous truly special is the variety of safari activities on offer — you can explore by vehicle, on foot, or by boat, each providing a completely different perspective on the wilderness. Boat safaris along the Rufiji are particularly magical, allowing you to glide past pods of hippo, basking crocodiles, and elephants coming to drink. Walking safaris with an armed guide bring you face-to-face with the bush at ground level, while fly camping lets you fall asleep under a canopy of stars in the heart of the reserve.
